How can I trace a citation to see who else has cited a particular book or article?

Answer

Here are some tools you can use to discover who has cited a particular book or article.  Please make an appointment with a librarian for further assistance.

Using an EBSCOhost database such as Academic Search Premiere (some EBSCO databases will have the option, others will not)

  • Look at the blue bar across the top for “Cited References” (may be under “More”)
  • Use the field searching options to search for one or more piece of information
  • Mark checkboxes to continue following the track of citations

Using ProQuest Central

  • Choose the “Advanced Search” option
  • Can search by author or by title in the search bar
  • Change the drop down from “Anywhere” to REF (both), CAU (author), or CTI (title)
  • Recommend removing the “Full text” checkmark before searching

Using Web of Science

  • Choose the “Cited Reference Search” option in the results list.
  • Fill in information as needed, aware that abbreviations may be used.  If you are unsure how to abbreviate, use the “View abbreviations list” link under the second search bar, publications are listed in alphabetical order.
  • Use date limiters as needed

Using Google Scholar

  • Go to scholar.google.com
  • Search the title of your article
  • Click on the “cited by” link beneath your article in the results list
